Important and interesting fun fact: Vancouver means “from the place where the cows cross the river.” Yeah, pretty much the exact same thing as Ox Ford, but with far fewer Fords, and many more vans.

DJ Dancefloor – Skating on Sunshine

Posted: December 18th, 2009 | Author: kyle | Filed under: DJ Dancefloor, Japan, Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

I’d like to give a big thanks to Japan for producing old men who love to dance. Also, Japan has the most disco feverish construction zones ever. There’s also a little dirt track oval motorcycle racing from rural Quebec thrown into the video for good measure. I hope you enjoy it. A downloadable mp3 link is below the video:

That man at 1:30 kicked higher than any old man has ever kicked before.  Those guys were probably raving in 1956.

Japanese TV shows rule

This video has a little something for everyone.  Re-enactments, crazy graphics, surprise guests, you name it. Easily the most bizarre thing I’ve ever been associated with…so far.  Enjoy.

Okay, okay.  The Pokemon one was up there as well:

The thought of being able to wear shirts like this un-ironically is somewhat pleasing. Three cheers for Japan!

I’m a huge fan of infrastructure and trying new things, so redo-ing this blog is a fun project.  Thanks again to Ian Mackenzie for egging on the switch to Wordpress.  I really liked blogger, and pretty much anything Google offers up, but sometimes you gotta start fresh.  So here we are.  I haven’t really blogged about much in the last couple years, but many fun things have happened.  I’ll try to post more often about stuff that’s gone down, keep you up to date on new things in the pipeline, and do my part to distribute ridiculous business idioms to no end.  It’s nice to try new things on for size.

A whole new blog

Posted: December 17th, 2009 | Author: kyle | Filed under: Uncategorized | 6 Comments »

So, I stayed up all night and created a new website. This site tries to combine all the goodness of oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com with the current random-ideas-miscellany of kylemacd.blogspot.com On the recommendation from the awesome Ian MacKenzie of ianmack.com fame, I’ve given Wordpress a chance, and the first time I’ve actually posted on a .com, rather than just have them forward to blogspot stuff.  I’ve wrestled with the idea of time-capsuling the classic red paperclip site, and am keen to get a personal website up and running.  Having oneredpaperclip.com available seemed like the kind of URL I couldn’t just archive and let stay static.  I’ve got a lot of little projects on the go and in planning stages and am very keen to have a central place to organize them somewhat.  So here we are.  Thoughts?  Tips?  Advice?  Best idea ever?  Worst idea ever?

Either way, here’s a comic for your looking enjoyment.

I take lots of pictures. You can see my flickr sets here.

A series of mangled bike pictures caught the eye of Rob of Galerie Armatta in Montreal, and they were exhibited in the spring of 2009 as Cycle Killer.

Cycle Killer makes a great exhibit.  Drop me a line if you’d like to show the pictures somewhere!

the one red paperclip project

**Click here to read the archived original red paperclip blog.**

On July 12, 2005 I posted a picture of a red paperclip on my blog and asked if anyone wanted to trade something bigger or better for it.  A few days later I traded the paperclip, and after making 14 trades over the course of a year, I wound up with a house located at 503 Main Street in Kipling Saskatchewan.

It was an amazing year.

Here’s a cool video that covers most of the project:

Over the year of making 14 trades, I met hundreds of awesome people made great new friends, and tried out many new things. The whole experience was incredible. Some of the more ridiculous highlights:

  • I was made mayor for the day of Kipling
  • Dom and I were made honorary residents of Kipling for life
  • I was given the key to the city.
  • I received a Guinness World Record for Most Successful Internet Trade
  • Kipling erected the World’s Largest Red Paperclip, another Guinness Record
  • Dom and I traveled to Japan to be surprise guests on one of those crazy Japanese shows.
  • Another Japanese TV show made this.
  • I was on stage with Alice Cooper at a concert in Fargo.
  • The press had a field day
  • I wrote a book about the adventure.
  • Volkswagen Spain made a TV commercial based on the story
  • I starred in a Mastercard commercial.
  • Grolsch Beer made a TV commercial inspired by the story

But the best thing of all was not that I wound up with a house in a year, or that the but that it was fun to do the project. By far the most important trade was when I traded away the red paperclip to start the process. If I’d never made that first trade to get things going, nothing would’ve ever happened!

I have since donated the house to the Town of Kipling, where along with the World’s Largest Red Paperclip, it is a major tourist attraction and community asset.
